TITLE AND DATE
(testing how this will fit) In I Know No Pardon, Andy Cabic tells a story of a young man desperate for the love a young woman. Realizing his mistakes, the man explains how his poor decisions have lead him to lead a life he didn’t feel he had complete control in choosing. Now that the rest of his life has gone sour, he pleads with his love, Maria, not to leave him like the rest of his life. Although he doesn’t expect much, he wants her to realize he’s not all that bad of a person.
Cabic also may be making references to the American West, a time when deception and running from the law was commonplace. There are also hints of an allusion to Arthur Laurent’s West Side Story. The name “Maria” at the beginning, and talk of making poor decisions that happened very quickly and impetuously. This is, however, unlikely the entire source, as some of the other references aren’t in line entirely with the plot of West Side Story.
Overall, Vetiver does an excellent job expressing more commonly felt feelings of abandonment and loneliness, part of the reason this is an excellent folk song. Having a story of a relatable character, ambiguous but still something believable helps the listener experience what the main character would be going through. Utilizing piano chords to compliment the simple melody, the song creates a soft and relaxing mood to accompany several strong ideas proposed throughout the song. Since the words are not lost in the music with bad vocals or overpowering instruments, they echo in the mind. Cabic does an exceptional job at creating a simple tune that steps outside the box of usual songs, excluding a chorus, and creates a masterpiece that is both captivating and memorable.
